In Melbourne’s neighborhood Balwyn North, a broad mix of design styles are represented; from French provincial homes to older brick veneer homes. To provide the clients with a modern and sophisticated home, the Australian architecture firm R ARCHITECTURE set out to design the Corby House as a future benchmark for the local area where many new homes are being built.
There’s been many calls by architects and experts alike to reduce the footprint of our homes in order to achieve true sustainability. R ARCHITECTURE’s Small Footprint Housing project, located in Pascoe Vale South, bucks typical housing design trends to build upwards and provide a contemporary take on Melbourne’s quintessential terrace houses.
Situated on a steeply sloping site, Corby House maximises allowable building area while delivering lavish light-filled spaces and amenity. Taking advantage of the northern aspect and 4m high ceilings, a large open plan Kitchen, Living and Dining area provides a sense of grandeur as it overlooks the plunge pool. The house consists of two study spaces for flexible working environments, a theatre and a large main bedroom with an adjoining retreat and balcony, taking full advantage of the distant views.
The ground floor terraces down the sloping site with a central entry with double height ceilings and feature stair splits the house creating separation and privacy between the living and sleeping spaces. Opposite the entry is a central courtyard with water feature provides focal point when entering the house while bringing daylight into the centre of the house.
A design ethos centred on living simply in connection to the outdoors has meant inherently Humble House is sustainably considered.
Humble House by R ARCHITECTURE stays true to its name, leaving the nice-to-haves at the front door.
The new application has been lodged on behalf of Ballarat Investments Group, with a striking copper-clad building designed by R ARCHITECTURE. the location of the site provides an opportunity to create interactive street frontages as well as a striking landmark building that forms part of the northern gateway to Shepparton.
With the precision and foresight of a sculptor, our project chips away at the stifling ‘nice to haves’ of homelife, leaving behind only the essentials of elegant, functional living — the result is Humble House. In designing Humble House we denote that scaling down need not be synonymous with sacrifice, rather Humble House offers a refined, though unassuming aesthetic that advocates for the joys of stripping away excess and living simply with ease.
When a pair of empty-nesters looking to downsize approached Gaurav Rajadhyax, architect and director at R ARCHITECTURE, to design their new home, they had a very clear idea of what they were after. “We wanted to capture the lifestyle of traditional Indian homes, which have open courtyards and lots of shared space,” says the female owner, who is a potter. “Because it’s a warmer climate [in India], we’re used to lots of sunlight, so we wanted to incorporate this aspect into the design too.”
The inspiration for this project was to design an elegant and sophisticated family home, suitable and flexible for various family dynamics. Whether it’s a young family or a multi, generational family, the concept was to provide a home that was flexible and provided multiple living spaces, enabling people to have their own space as well as come together.
Situated in an area consists of a broad mix of design styles, from French provincial homes to older brick veneer homes, our clients wanted a design that was modern and sophisticated, which would set a benchmark for the neighbourhood. The local area is seeing a lot of large new homes being built and we wanted Corby House to set an example for the future character.
Congratulations to R Architecture, who won the Client Choice Awards this year. R Architecture is a Melbourne-based small practice and an ACA member. Here, Director Gaurav Rajadhyax offers some sound advice on providing the best client experience.
R Architecture won Best Architecture Firm (less than $30m revenue) in the 2022 Client Choice Awards and credits the win on the way it differentiates itself in a crowded market. That is, by focusing on the needs of clients first and foremost.
